Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of access tunnels providing entry to the site... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their courage," Healey commented. "They were part of a great many British troops stationed over the festive period. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, shows how British military are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "major assault" against Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
